How Do I Choose an Insurance Agent?

We believe choosing the right insurance agent, is much more important than which insurance company you choose. The reason is simple. If you find a good, quality agent, they are going to do their best to take care of you, no matter what company they are associated with.

It is preferable to go with an insurance company that has local agents, over a company where you have to dial an 800 number for your every insurance need. Say you need to file a claim. If you have difficulties during the claim process, it's in your local agents' best interest to be your advocate. They would rather go to bat for you every way they can than lose your business. On the other hand, at 1-800-insurance, the only advocate you have is someone else at the same 800 number.

Thus, we strongly suggest you do a little bit of work up front to ensure that you choose a high quality, professional agent to take care of you. You should also do what you can to get to know your agent and their staff. The more they know and like you, the harder they will work for you - if and when you need them.

A lot of people consider only the price of their policies when making decisions regarding their insurance. Unfortunately they don't realize that they sometimes sacrifice value by using price alone, until it's too late. The cost later could be enormous when they realize that they went with an agent or insurer that was not looking out for their interests. There are a number of other things that should be taken into consideration along with price when making such an important decision.

We suggest you start by asking people you know and trust who they use for their insurance needs. Once you know who they use, ask a few more questions. It's good to find out if they've been happy with their agent and if they've felt like their needs are always taken care of. It's also helpful to know if they've been taken care of during any claims they may have filed, as well when they've had customer service needs.

Once you've spoken with people you know and trust, we suggest you utilize our site. You'll be able to see what others in your area are saying about a particular agent. Of course there will always be the random review that falls outside of the normal reviews. What you should look for is a pattern. If an agent has been rated by thirty people, and the average rating is 1 star, that might be an indication that something is wrong. However, if an agent has been reviewed the same number of times and has an average of 5 stars, the occasional 2 star review probably doesn't mean as much.

Finally, you should meet with the agent. Call their office and set up a time to sit down with them for abour thirty minutes. Talk with them about what you need. The main purpose during this meeting should be to make sure you feel comfortable with that agent. This is important, because if you get into a situation where you need their assistance, you'll want to be sure you're comfortable talking with them.

Once you've gone through this process, please send us some feedback on how things went for you. If you have any suggestions for the process, please let us know! Of course, we also suggest that you look up any agent who you've had experience with, and share that with others who might be needing information on that agent through this website.
